COM 333, Section B
Communicating Through Internet
University of Illinois at Springfield
Summer 2000
Prof. Burks Oakley
Mid-Course Evaluation - 23-26 June 2000

1.  What do you like most about this class?

Learning things about the Internet I didn't know and having an instructor who is "fully engaged" in the class.

The interaction with the class and the teacher.

It is easy to understand the assignments because it is at a level that those who are technologically advanced or technologically disadvantaged can maneuver through it.  I also like the interaction with the instructor and the students.  It seems as though everyone jumped in from the very beginning and formed a group.  The daily articles of interest from the instructor is a nice touch.  He keeps us up-to-date on what's happening in the world of cyberspace.

The fact that it is online allows me to complete the discussions at what ever time is convient for me.

The research tools that are being provided.  e.g.  search engines, Infortrac, Etex, etc.

Interaction with other students and content of what we are learning.

I enjoy the excitement of the internet, it's very different for me, and I'm learning a great deal of information.

I enjoy the amount of information available through the lectures and links to the syllabus.  I have learned ALOT over just three weeks!

I like the flexibility of the online classes. I schedule my class time around my life.

Interaction with the instructor has been outstanding.  Burks Oakley is either spending a tremendous amount of time on this class or he is exceptionally well organized and working at peak efficiency.

Learning about all the cool websites to visit and how to search more efficiently.

2.  What do you like least about this class?
To be thorough, it takes a lot of time.

I think that there is too much work for a two hour class.  I happen to think that for a two hours of credit having all of the projects and answering a question for each lecture and having a vocab test(which I still do not understand) is a bit rediculos.  I would expect this amount of work for a four credit class

The pace, but of course it is a summer course so it is suppose to be fast-paced.  But there is sufficient time to complete assignments.

Honestly, it seems to have a heavy workload for a 2 hour course, but I guess it is the summer session.

The amount of time required to complete assignments in view of this being a 2 credited hour class.

The time investiture required.

Working full time it's hard to keep up with the considerable amount of assignments, but I accept that knowing that I am learning something of value.

I like least not being able to meet face to face with the instructer.

This class is proving more time consuming than I exoected for a 2 hour course.  It has been quite a few years since I took a summer course, though.

The time factor.

3.  What could be done to improve this class during the second half of the semester?
Keep the on-going communication flowing - it makes the class!

At this point, I would not suggest any changes.  The course is well thought out and well laid out and easy for those of us who work full-time and attend classes to keep up.

It would be hard to improve the content.

?

I like it the way it is.

???-Maybe add an extra week or 2 to complete all the assignments!  :-)

4.  Are you having any technical difficulties?  If you are, please describe.
NO

Not at this time

No technical problems as of yet.

I'm seem to have gotten over any technical difficulties.  I've learned through my mistakes.

In the beginning of the class I had an old computer and I experienced lots of difficulties.  However, a week ago I bought a new Windows 98 computer and I have since had no technical difficulties.

I can't make the yellow smiley face.

This course demands more from the hardware than previous online courses I have taken.  For two of the lectures, my PC would not play the Real Time Audio.  At first I thought it was due to the time of day and web traffic.  I then discovered that it operated better through Internet Explorer than it did through AOL4.0.  The availability of the lecture transcript allowed me to keep up with lectures despite technical shortcomings.

Just occasional computer crashes.

5.  Is this class meeting your expectations?  Is it meeting the objectives you had at the start of the course?
Absolutely!

I rate it a 11 on a scale of 1-10.  I learned more in the first week than I knew existed on the Internet and I continue to learn daily.

It is meeting my expectations, and the objective I have had set at the start of the course are being met.

For the most part.  I would like more guidance on how to conduct a search on the web.  How to better define a search.

Yes.

By meeting I assume you are referring to the online course.  I am happy to say that it has exceeded my expectations.

The class is meeting my expectations.  I have always had a love for computers and this class has heightened my interest in the subject.

yes, I am enjoying this class. I have learned a lot of useful stuff.

Yes.  The designer(s) of this course knew better what I wanted to learn than I did.  It is definitely hitting my objectives along with some objectives I had not considered.

Not so much on the amount of work, but I love the material covered!

6.  Are the topics of interest to you?  Is the instructor knowledgeable in the subject matter?
Yes - the instructor has raised my level of expectation (for professors on-line) for future courses.

The topics are very interesting.  I find that for this to be an Internet course, I spend a lot of time printing out useful information.  The instructor is very knowledgeable in this subject and seems to enjoy talking about it with us.  He even answers technolgy questions from students that are not related to the class.

THe instructor is incredibly knowledgeable in this field.  The topics are of interest to me.

Yes, the topics are very interesting.  Burks you have a wealth of knowledge.

Very interesting topics and Burks is terrific.

The topics are of great interest to me.  The instuctor is erudition personified, he does such an excellent job of communcating with the student, more so than if we were in the classroom.

The topics are very interesting.  The instuctor knows alot about the internet and is very prompt with answering questions.

yes, I like the topic and I like the pace of the class. Yes, I feel that you know a lot about the internet-and you are friendly too.

Yes.  Yes.

Yes---YES!

7.  Are the Discussion Questions of value to you?  Has WebBoard been a good tool for class discussions, posting assignments, etc.?  Have the interactions in WebBoard added to your learning experience?
Yes - I think it's very valuable to see the perspectives of others.  We all learn from one another.

I do not like web board it is slow and tedios

Yes!  It helps me to learn to search for information in a more time efficient manner and to evaluate their usefulness.  I like using the WebBoard.  It is easy to maneuver and user-friendly.  :)

The discussion board is key to this class.  It adds an untold amount of information to the class as a whole.

Yes to all questions.

Yes to all of the above.

It's getting late and I'm tired, so I am going to be laconic and say yes to all.

I like the WebBoard but I don't know how to jump in and talk.  I don't understand where to post so it will be attached with the discussion.  I have a limited knowledge on WebBoarding.

I think that the discussion questions are a good self-check to see if you are up to speed. WebBoard is a great tool. I think it's fun to interact with other students anynomously, that way you can be perfecftly honest.

Definitely.

Yes--I feel more intelligent reading than I do responding!

8.  Are you getting the "right" amount of feedback from your instructor?
Outstanding - the instructor gives great feedback, as well as additional e-mail informational updates.

plenty of feedback from the instructer

He is online ALL the time and is always sending us information.  I really like the fact that he responds to each individual student's assignments and relays points of interest brought up by another student to the class.  He even has a section where we can talk about stuff and he even jumps in on the conversations.

Yes

The feedback you provide is appropriate, timely and plentiful.  You provide more feedback than I have ever received on an online class.  My hat is off to you!!!

Yes.

As previously stated in question 6, it couldn't be any better.

I am getting the right feedback from my instructor.

Yes.

Very definitely.

Yes, sometimes more that what I expect--which is GOOD!

9.  Is the instructor's teaching style appropriate for an online course?
The instructor should be a poster child for the profile of on-line instructors.

Yes

Yes!  He is very professional and also personable.

Yes

Yes!!!  Exceeds my expectations.

Yes.

It's hard to be objective about this question because I have never had an online course before, but I thoroughly enjoy his pedagogy.

The instructor's lectures are good because I can print the transcripts and read them at my leisure.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes-very responsive to our comments and questions-good impression for a first time online learning experience-I may not be so lucky next time.

10.  Anything else you want to comment on?
Lucky for me I found my way into Burks classes - what is he teaching in the future - I want to sign up!!

Keep up the good work Burk!  The class has been great so far!

nope!  :)

Great course-I feel that I am learning quite a bit.

I'm glad and proud to be in the class!!

No

UIS staff is building an excellent online program.  My only concern is that more traditional courses should be offered.  Some of the available courses are somewhat esoteric.

Will this course have a chance of becoming 4 credit hours instead of 2?  :-)   Sorry, but doesn't hurt to ask!
