Description
The class provides you with a systematic outlook of the main ideas in contemporary political philosophy: liberalism and communitarianism. We will use two main criteria in order to construct a grid on which to place particular political positions. First, the level of importance given to individual choices versus community interests. Second, the level of economic assistance provided by the government versus acceptable level of governmental economy.
We analyze various political views on the continuum between liberalism and communitarianism as well as between left-wing and right-wing theories. All four possible positions are represented: left-wing liberalism (social liberalism), right-wing liberalism (libertarianism), left-wing communitarianism (socialist communitarianism), right-wing communitarianism (conservatism).
