COM 333 – Communicating Through Internet
University of Illinois at Springfield
Spring 2001 Semester
Prof. Burks Oakley – Section B

End-of-Course Student Evaluations

The online evaluation form was available for students during the final two weeks of the semester, when it was linked to several announcements and messages within the Blackboard course management system.  Evaluations were submitted anonymously by 13 students in the course.

A summary of the responses follows.  Note that not every student provided an “open-ended” response to each question.

Category I:  Overall Course Management

1. The course as a whole was:

Poor = 1 ------- Excellent = 5
Range: 3-5
Average: 4.8

I feel this course offers as much or as little that you want to get out of the course while still offering options for all technology levels of learners.

I really enjoyed COM 333!!

I thought that the course was fantastic. Even though I had no experience online I did not feel left out or left behind.

There has been excellent and timely feedback from students and instructors.

Burks went above and beyond the call of duty on this one.

I absolutely loved this class!!! It was so beneficial and the web links were tremendous. The lectures were easy to understand and the Discussion Questions were very tailored to the lectures and web links.

2. The course topics were:
Poorly Chosen = 1 ------- Well Chosen = 5
Range: 4-5
Average:  4.9

I really learned a lot.

They were relevant and current.

Very relevant and practical.

Useful and learning.

I felt the variety of topics were wonderful. It gave a wide variety of learning and resources.

3. The assignments were a good use of my time and effort.
Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range: 4-5
Average:  4.8

I really appreciated being able to use this course to research for other courses.

Good assignments!

They took a lot of time but were always informative.

Again relevant and practical.

Some of the assignments I couldn't access on web tv but the ones I did complete were a very good use of my time.

4. The course met the objectives that I had at the start of the semester.
Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range: 4-5
Average:  4.8

You bet!

Far beyond my expectations.

They exceeded my expectations.

Even more so. I didn’t realize that some areas would be looked at – especially the optional interaction on the internet and student discussion boards.

This is my first semester doing online courses so I didn't know what to expect. I love them!!! Professor Oakley made it very simple to find all of the information and keep up with the class.

5. An appropriate amount of work was required in this course.
Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range:  1-5
Average:  4.2

Too much work for a 2 credit hour class!

There was a lot of work and I feel it should have more credit hours earned.

Very pleasant and manageable.

For a two credit class, I expected to spend less time completing class work. In many cases I spent much more time working on this class than I did working on my 4 credit class, including the class time. There were so many things to look at and try. On the flip side I learned a lot from this class!

I never felt too overloaded even taking 2 other courses. I feel that we covered so much that it went suprisingly smoothe.

Category 2:  Student Outcomes of Instruction

6. I learned things in this course that will be very useful to me in the future.

Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range: 4-5
Average:  4.9

Oh yes!!! Definitely!!!

Yes, it already has been helpful in other courses and some personal searches.

Absolutely! Internet skills are invaluable!

My Internet skills have greatly improved. I can now pass this information on when I begin to teach.

Yes, I found research sites that I had no idea were out there and I will be using them for future references.

7. This course improved my understanding of the Internet and the World Wide Web.
Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range:  4-5
Average:  4.9

Oh yes!!! Definitely!!!

I was pretty much an experienced net user but it gave me some different approaches.

Yup!

Absolutely!!!! I am not an internet expert but now I definitely have a good start.

Category 3:  Instructor Characteristics and Style

8. The instructor’s teaching style was appropriate for an online course.

Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range: 5-5
Average:  5.0

The instructor’s teaching style made the course very interesting while professional.

Oakley is an Internet God!

The instructor puts 200% effort into this class.

As in number one, Burks went above and beyond in terms of his interaction with the class.

Always available, and extremely helpful.

More than appropriate. He not only cared about us as students, but as people. I wish all of the instructors in college would follow his lead.

9. Did the instructor indicate the relationships of the course content to the world at-large?
No, Hardly Ever = 1 ------- Yes, Quiet Often = 5
Range:  3-5
Average:  4.8

Oh yes!!! Definitely!!! All the time!!!

Yes, every aspect of the class was timely.

Again, as above, in the internet news discussion board especially.

Very much. All of the topics were related to the world-at-large. We even learned to translate information from a foreign language.. this is very helpful when researching topics that can be researched from many cultures and countries.

Strong point.

10. The instructor was knowledgeable in the subject matter.
Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range: 5-5
Average:  5.0

Actually, I think Ray knows a lot more.

Very much.

No doubt here.

You could tell that Professor Oakley was right on target with his information and is a good role model in the art of the internet.

Very strong point.

Category 4:  Instructional Environment

11. There were positive interactions between the instructor and the students.

Almost Never = 1 ------- Almost Always = 5
Range: 4-5
Average:  4.9

This course has provided the MOST interactions by far from any other online course I have taken.

Very welcoming – real sense of community. I’m going to miss going to class!

Every student comment or submission was responded to quickly by the instructor.

Burks kept things going and in a positive manner.

Absolutely!!!! Professor Oakley always responded to all of the postings and gave his input and also tried to help us see things on a broader view.

There was much more interaction than with a traditional course. Always positive.

12. The type of interaction among my classmates in the course discussion forum was one of:
Isolation = 1 ------- Community Spirit = 5
Range:  3-5
Average:  4.8

Very welcoming – real sense of community. I’m going to miss going to class!

This was definitely a lively community!

Very enjoyable.

The students were all helpful and I emailed quite a few seperately on different topics and they were very helpful.

13. The number of students in the class was:
Too Small = 1 ------- Too Large = 5
Range:  3-4
Average:  3.2

Just right. But some people really didn’t participate very much. Where were they??

Could have been smaller or made into advanced & beginners classes.

Seems just right.

Odd at times. New people would suddenly appear and then disappear. Very strange.

At the beginning it seemed like too many especially when the social interactions were filling up the course discussion boards, but this problem was solved by having a separate place for this and a message from Burks regarding this subject.

I had no problem with the size of the class. I believe it was harder for Professor Oakley to keep up with all of us!!! He is so professional that he can keep up with many students and not be effected by it.

This was not a factor in my opinion.

14. I felt comfortable using the technologies in this course.
Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range:  4-5
Average:  4.9

As an over-50 returning student, I was surprised to see how simple all of this is to use.

Everything was well explained.

Fully confident.

Yes, I felt the technologies were very helpful and were things we needed to learn.

Category 5:  Student Preferences for Instruction/Learning Style

15. My learning style is appropriate for an online course.

Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range:  3-5
Average:  4.5

Yes, and I have too many other things going on to go to class.

I am very computer oriented.

Highly motivated.

I feel as though the online courses are very fitting to my lifestyle and needs.

16. The course activities helped me learn more than I would have by myself.
Strongly Disagree = 1 ------- Strongly Agree = 5
Range: 4-5
Average: 4.8

Yes, I enjoyed learning from all the others, and from Burks and Ray’s feedback.

Definitely, I have grown by leaps and bounds in this class.

It pointed me in the right directions, plus the feedback and encouragement of the group is a big factor.

Absolutely, some guidance was offered and questions were freely accepted and answered promptly.

Yes, I was able to access many sites very easily. This made me want to learn more. It was so interesting that I don't feel I would have learned as much by reading it in a text.

Category 6:  General Comments

17. What did you like most about this course?

The interaction between the students-to-student complimented with the interaction with student-to-instructor. I also enjoyed the group project.

The interaction with everyone!

I really enjoyed the way that the instructors were able to explain very complex ideas in a way that was easy to comprehend. The instructors were incredibly knowledgeable and very eager to assist.

The feedback.

The interaction between students and between instructor and students!

The constant feedback and interaction. If there was a problem with a link or material a question or resolution was quickly suggested. And it worked!

Getting to know the web.

Relevance to current trends in the Internet.

The ability to work on the assignments at my own pace.

I loved everything about the course. I wouldn't change anything and would only recommend it to everyone!!!

I feel that I 'know' the instuctor even though I've never met him. Likewise for the other instuctors/students.
The program feels very well organized, close. There was no intimidation factor in approaching the teacher.

18. What did you like least about this course?
Nothing.

TOO MUCH WORK FOR ONLY TWO CREDIT HOURS!

In the beginning I felt overwhelmed, but that went away fast.

It was a lot of work!

Hard to maneuver through all the messages. If you couldn’t get back for a day or so, you could have as many as 200+ messages to read through.

The paper.

Nothing.

I think it needs to be a 4 hour course.

There is nothing I didn't like.

Can't think of one thing.

19. Would you have been able to take this course if it were not online?
No = 1 ------- Yes = 2
Range: 1-2
Average 1.3

I live too far away from a campus, and I work full time, and I have family responsibilities. Online is the ONLY way for me.

The commute would be awful.

Able but not willing.

But I took it BECAUSE it was offered online.

Perhaps, but it seems that the whole purpose was to use the Internet. I do not believe that I need an instructor in a classroom teaching an Internet class.

With my lifestyle, it is very important to take my schooling online.

20. How can this course be improved?
I wish the number of credits earned from this course were raised to a 4 credit hour course. I put in MORE hours/course in this course than I did in many of my other 4 credit hour courses. I believe I gained more from this 2 credit hour course than I did from some other 4 credit hour courses. So, in general I guess I got more for my $.

???? Fine as is.

Offer more credit hours for those of us who would like to expand on the subject matter.

More credit hours but it was pretty close to perfect now.

I can't think of a thing to change. It is very complete and helps bring a very broad knowledge of the internet.
