Online Initiative Proposal Process at UIS

The newly awarded grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation provides support for creating online-delivered versions of eight existing degrees (graduate or undergraduate) at UIS. Grant support is provided for faculty stipends to convert ten existing campus-based courses to online delivery for each selected degree program (with the assistance of OTEL); the first year of a one-half time program coordinator to assist with student recruitment, advising and coordination; promotion and advertising; and assistance for the hiring of new faculty members to help assume the additional load of offering an online version of the current degree program.

The process for proposing online delivery of degree programs to be funded by the new Sloan grant:

  • Departments should carefully consider the impact of joining this initiative. Such factors as extending the national/international reach and reputation of the department; integrating a new, distant cohort of students into the pool of current students served with advising, placement, etc.; responsibility for creating the online versions of courses to be delivered; sharing of the online teaching and advising workload among current faculty and the addition of faculty lines in carefully identified areas to help meet those needs. Contact Ray Schroeder Schroeder.ray@uis.edu at the Office of Technology Enhanced Learning (OTEL) 206-7537 for information and support
  • A recommendation of the department/program committee should be forwarded to the executive committee of the college. The recommendation should include:
    • A description of the potential new student base to be reached by the online program
    • Statement of support for the initiative by faculty members of the department
    • A concise plan including development and deployment schedule for classes, anticipated enrollments, and fiscal sustainability of the proposal
    • New resources needed to assure the initiative’s success
  • The executive committee of the college will review the proposal in the context of the needs of the college and make a recommendation to the dean.
  • Upon recommendation from the dean, the proposal will be submitted to the undergraduate or graduate council to assure that all of the appropriate curricular requirements are met.
  • The Provost in consultation with the Academic Cabinet will make final approvals
