Title: Inquiry in interaction: How local adaptations of curricula shape classroom communities
Author(s): Enyedy N, Goldberg J
Keywords:
Abstract: In this study, we seek a better understanding of how individuals and their daily interactions shape and reshape social structures that constitute a classroom community. Moreover, we provide insight into how discourse and classroom interactions shape the nature of a learning community, as well as which aspects of the classroom culture may be consequential for learning. The participants in this study include two teachers who are implementing a new environmental science program, Global Learning through Observation to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE), and interacting with 54 children in an urban middle school.

Title: Online Community and Professional Learning in Education
Author(s): Havelock, B.
Keywords:
Abstract: A growing body of research in education and professional development for educators indicates the importance of social relationships in the developing professional lives of educators. Teachers who regularly engage in social and professional ways with other educators beyond their classrooms are much more likely to display the professional hallmarks of continuous inquiry and effective teaching than their colleagues who operate in isolation behind their classroom doors (Riel & Becker, 2000; Darling-Hammond, 1999; Wilson & Berne, 1999). While teachersimmediate milieu for professional learning beyond their classrooms is that of their school and district setting (Fullan, 1991; Elmore, Peterson & McCarthey, 1996; Westheimer, 1998), this review explores the challenges and potentials of learning communities for geographically dispersed groups of educators through online, or Internet-based environments.
