Turn-It-In

We will be using the Turn-It-In (TII) online service to deter plagiarism.  Here is some text from the TII website that explains why I feel it is (unfortunately) necessary to do this:

The Internet has made plagiarism easier than ever before. From elementary schools to the highest levels of academia, the ease of downloading and copying "untraceable" online information have led to a virtual epidemic of digital plagiarism.

Our plagiarism prevention system makes it easy to identify students who do submit unoriginal work, and also acts as a powerful deterrent to stop plagiarism before it starts.

At the heart of our plagiarism prevention system are our customized Originality Reports. Originality Reports are exact duplicates of submitted papers, except that any text either copied or paraphrased appears underlined, color-coded, and linked to its original source.

Additional information about plagiarism is available at:

http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/wts/plagiarism.html

Please make sure to read and understand the information at this site.

Before you submit your papers to the PAC442B Blackboard, you must submit it to the Turn-It-In website so that it can be checked for originality.  Note that a complete student user guide for Turn-It-In is available on this site at:

http://www.turnitin.com/static/training_support/tii_student_guide.pdf  (1.3 megabytes)

If you have not previously used Turn-It-In, you will need to create a user account.  [If you already have a user account, you will have to add the PAC442B course to your existing account when you login].  Simply follow these steps:

Go to:  http://www.turnitin.com

In the upper right corner of the main Turn-It-In homepage, click on "create a user profile".

You will be asked to enter the following information:

You will be asked to specify the type of user that you are (student), and to agree with the terms of the Turn-It-In user agreement.

Assuming you have done everything correctly, you then will view a screen with a link to "start class enrollment wizard".

You then will be asked to enter the Class ID, which is:    1162818
and the "class enrollment password", which is:     PrairieStars    (case sensitive, one word)

At this point, your user profile is complete and you are ready to submit a paper.

To submit a paper, login to the Turn-It-In website with your e-mail address and password.  Click on the link to PAC442B.  Click on the submit button for the appropriate assignment and follow the instructions.

To view the results of the "plagiarism screening" (called an Originality Report), click on the report icon in the "contents" column of your portfolio [note - it will take about 5 minutes for the report to be generated].  This report will open in a new window.  The report will highlight any text that matches text in the Turn-It-In database, as well as the source of any matching text.
